Fall Intake: Your Complete Guide to Making the Right Choice
The Fall Intake, typically commencing in September and concluding in December, is widely regarded as the optimal application period for most universities. This intake is particularly notable for MBA candidates and full-time programs. Early applicants benefit from competitive advantages, such as reduced application fees and broader access to scholarship opportunities.
How is Fall Intake Different than the Other Intakes?
A key benefit of applying during the fall intake is the wider range of courses available. Due to the higher number of applicants and the importance of the semester, universities offer more courses in the fall compared to the spring intake.
Which universities are to be targeted during fall intake?
When deciding between the fall and spring intakes, the first step is to check if your target universities accept applications for both. Many top schools don’t offer spring admissions, so thorough research is key.
Fall intake generally offers better chances of acceptance due to larger class sizes and a wider selection of courses, as more students apply during this period.
Moreover, job fairs and campus recruitment events are often timed to benefit fall students, who will have completed more semesters by the time these opportunities arise. Weather is another factor, as the two intakes occur in different seasons, so consider your comfort. There’s a misconception that visas are easier to obtain for fall, but this isn’t true—visa approval depends on your profile and the university, not the intake.
Take your time, do your research, and choose the intake that best aligns with your goals and circumstances.

Job opportunities in the Fall Intake
In terms of job prospects, there is no significant difference between fall and spring students, as long as you excel in your field. However, spring students may face fewer internship opportunities. Additionally, since fall students are one semester ahead, they may have already formed their project teams, which can put spring students at a disadvantage when it comes to group work. It’s comparable to joining in the second year of a bachelor’s program, where established teams and networks are already in place.
Collaboration & Group Studies During the Fall Intake
International students commencing their studies in the fall have a six-month advantage over those starting in the spring. This advanced timing can lead to challenges for spring students in forming social and professional networks and may complicate the process of selecting collaborators for group projects and other team-based activities.

First, you spend about 5 minutes on introduction and setup, making sure your computer’s camera, speakers, and microphone work, submitting your government-issued photo ID, and reviewing the test rules.
Next, you take the adaptive test for 45 minutes, answering various English questions that change in difficulty based on how you’re doing.
Finally, there’s a 10-minute session where you respond to prompts with longer answers: speaking for 1–3 minutes and writing for 3–5 minutes. These samples are sent to the institution along with your scores.
The Duolingo English Test has three main parts: Introduction & Onboarding, the Adaptive Test, and the Writing and Speaking Sample. You’ll start by setting up your test environment and reviewing the rules. Then, you’ll take a test that adapts to your skill level, with questions on reading and listening. International students take standardized exams to show they are ready for university studies, can speak and understand English well, and are considered for scholarships. These exams, like the SAT, TOEFL, or IELTS, help universities compare students from different countries fairly. Sometimes, students also need these test scores to get a student visa. These exams ensure that students are prepared for their new academic and cultural environment.
What is IELTS?
The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a test for people who don’t speak English as their first language and need to show their English skills. It’s often needed for studying at universities, moving to English-speaking countries, or getting a job. There are two types: Academic, for those going to college or professional fields, and General Training, for those working or training abroad. The test has four parts: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. You get a score between 1 and 9 for each part, and the average of these scores is your final result. You can take it on paper or on a computer.
The IELTS test is crucial for academic, professional, and migration purposes abroad. It is recognized by thousands of leading universities as proof of English proficiency. Many professional organizations in fields such as medicine and engineering require IELTS for credentialing, necessitating retaking the test after graduation for employment in English-speaking countries. Furthermore, governments in the UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand accept IELTS scores for permanent residency applications, with specific score requirements varying by visa type.
What is PTE?
The PTE (Pearson Test of English) is a computer-based test for people who need to prove their English skills for studying abroad or getting a visa. It tests speaking, listening, reading, and writing all in one go, and you usually get your results within two days. The test is divided into PTE Academic for university and visa applications, and PTE General for general language proficiency. Scores range from 10 to 90, showing how well you know English.
Students aiming to study or move to an English-speaking country often take the PTE Academic exam. This computer-based test shows their English skills. Good PTE scores also indicate that the student can effectively communicate and express their ideas in an international setting.

The decision between PTE and IELTS is ultimately a matter of personal preference.
